What Research Says About the IB Programme Standards and Practices

Room: Ontario

presented by David Ogden, IB Consultant,

What connections do the IB's programme standards have to school improvement research? Learn how the standards and practices align with research-proven practices. Participants will review selected research studies to see the overlap between research-based practices and IB's recommended practices for PYP, MYP and Diploma Programme schools. Schools can see how they follow the research when they implement the IB's standards and practices.

Re-connective Internationalism: Using the IB Middle Years Programme's Internationalism to Reach Latino Youth

Room: Colorado

presented by James C. Jupp, MYP Coordinator, Martin Middle School
Marisela Morin, Spanish Teacher, Martin Middle School

Action Research Methodologies and CAS: Exploring, Improving, and Studying

Room: Huron

presented by Benjamin C. Feinstein, Diploma Programme Coordinator, South High School
Wynn Cherry, Diploma Programme Coordinator, Broughton High School

Can you imagine doing a CAS trip to Guatemala? What effects would that have on the people that went, and on the community? How would you even begin to measure such effects? How could you apply what you learned to building future CAS Projects, and improving current projects? In this session, we will discuss how to employ Action Research methodologies by sharing the results of our own study on one of our own ongoing CAS Projects, Proyecto Quetzal. Proyecto Quetzal involves, among other things, an intensive service-learning trip to Guatemala. Come see what it's all about!

Making Data Work for You: Where the IB is Headed

Room: Ohio

presented by Michael Dean, Research Manager, International Baccalaureate
Helen Skillern, Analyst Programmer, International Baccalaureate

The success of the IB in North America and the Caribbean has fueled growth and notoriety. In order to maintain a high level of service and meet the growing data needs of schools and districts as well as local and national governments, IB is developing new data collection methods and tools. The school districts project will allow IB to better address schools’ needs, plan for the future and provide current detailed reports of IB students and schools in North America and the Caribbean. This session is designed to offer heads of schools, coordinators and any other individual interested in IB data an introduction to the new data collection tools to be introduced at the beginning of 2008. The session will also discuss the uses of this data and provide a forum for discussion on all topics related to IB data.

Bringing International Baccalaureate to Chicago’s High Schools:

Do High Levels of Preparation Lead to Enrollment in Selective Colleges?

Room: Missouri

presented by Vanessa Coca, Research Analyst, Consortium on Chicago School Research
Jamiliyah Gilliam, Qualitative Researcher, University of Chicago
Eliza Moeller, Lead Qualitative Researcher, Consortium on Chicago School Research

The IB program has been used by the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) as a part of its strategy to provide greater access to rigorous coursework to low-income and minority students in its neighborhood high schools. Has access to high levels of preparation through the IB program translated into enrollment in selective colleges? This presentation takes an in-depth look at this question through case studies of IB students as they progress from their junior year along the pathway to college enrollment, and examines the role of support in college choice. It concludes by showing the college pathway of IB students compared to their CPS classmates, and whether their college choices matched their level of preparation.
