IB Orientation Seminar

This session is designed for school officials and leaders who are investigating the feasibility of bringing the IB to their schools. This session is also appropriate for schools or districts with existing IB programmes that would like to add additional programmes. The objectives of this session are to familiarize participants with: the philosophy, structure and purposes of the IB programmes; the financial obligations of IB authorization; the educational advantages of IB programmes; the IBO application and authorization processes; the service to be expected from IBO and IBNA and; the processes employed in working with IBO and IBNA.

It’s Not Enough to Speak Inquiry

This session focuses upon the ways we can make inquiry an integral part of the curriculum instead of merely treating it as an “add on.” We will engage in interactive experiences which will include: Creating the conditions and organizing the classroom for inquiry; modeling inquiry; helping all students of diverse needs question, take risks and engage in critical thinking leading to deep understandings; establishing criteria for asking "good" and deeper, more philosophic questions; fashioning IB curricula for inquiry across the continuum with authentic, alternative assessments. We will emphasize inquiry as a way of knowing integral to all subjects and a process to be assessed. This session will emphasize inquiry strategies within the entire K-12 curriculum.

Facing History and Ourselves: An Introductory Workshop for Educators
Facilitator: Jack Weinstein, Director, Facing History and Ourselves, SF Bay Area Region

This session is an introductory study of the historical development and lessons of the Holocaust and the Eugenics movement. We will use an inter-disciplinary approach to explore identity and membership in society. Participants will be exposed to questions about justice and judgment; examples of rescue and resistance; and some of the legacies of this history. Through this is only an introduction to a complex subject, participants will learn the framework and methods of the Facing History curriculum. Teachers attending this session will learn to convey in their classrooms that few events in history are inevitable and that most are the result of choices made by countless individuals and groups.

Guiding Instruction Through Assessment in the PYP

This practical session demonstrates classroom assessment procedures and tools designed to promote achievement, document standards, substantiate progress, and provide information to guide instructional decisions. Teachers select from a repertoire of assessment
strategies including students' self-assessment, graphic organizers, simplified rubric development, and quick assessments when you only have a minute!

Dr. Bertie Kingore is an international consultant who has worked with students, their teachers, and their parents for over 30 years. Recognized for her humorous and practical presentations, her energetic sessions leave teachers revitalized and eager to implement her shared ideas and learning experiences in their own classrooms.

Recognition of the IB Diploma
Facilitators: Bob Poole, Head of Recognition Services, IB North America and Sandra Wade Pauly, University and Government Liaison, IB North America

An update on current university and government recognition for the IB programmes. The session will include recommendations and advice for gaining recognition with both legislators and universities and will detail the support that IBNA can provide to such initiatives. Examples of good policy and successful strategies will be shared and discussed. This session is primarily designed for diploma programme coordinators and administrators. Some of the government discussion will be appropriate for MYP and PYP coordinators, heads of schools, active members of subregional groups, legislators and university personnel, parents.
