This session will highlight the importance of collaboration in an IB Primary Years Programme, particularly through the role of the specialists. The presenters will discuss the methods that they have used to create a unified school and a community of learners and how they, as a specialist team, have made connections with the PYP through the programme of inquiry. The presenters will share practical suggestions on ways to incorporate specialists into your PYP school through resources, examples and a multimedia presentation.

Karlyn Novillo, Spanish Teacher, Evergreen Park World Studies Elementary School
Karlyn Novillo is the Spanish teacher at Evergreen Park Elementary. During her 13 years of teaching she has worked as an immersion teacher, a reading and math coach, and has presented at immersion conferences around the United States. She strongly believes that learning another language opens children's minds to new experiences and gives them a global perspective of the world. She also values her collaboration with the other specialists at Evergreen. It gives her an opportunity to share ideas, work together on special projects, and get the support that is needed to help the students in her school feel successful.

Kim Korus, Music Teacher, Evergreen Park World Studies Elementary School
Kim Korus has been the music teacher at Evergreen Park World Studies Elementary for five years. She teaches general music to grades one through five, and also has a 4th and 5th grade choir. The most exciting part to her about Evergreen Park becoming an IB World School is the collaboration that has occurred between the specialists. She no longer feels isolated being the only music teacher in the building, and there is a sense of community between the specialists that wasn't there before. She feels this community between the specialists is having a positive impact on her teaching and the students.

Catherine Moore, Art Teacher, Evergreen Park World Studies Elementary School
Catherine Moore has been Art Specialist at Evergreen Park World Studies Elementary for the past eight years. The IB program has allowed her to have a deeper understanding of integrating all subject areas with an emphasis in art. She has taught abroad in Ireland, Korea and China; these experiences have impacted her teachings by creating an appreciation that adheres to the PYP environment. Evergreen students are rich in diversity, which is an asset in forming a global community, working together by modeling unity with art, media, music, physical education, Spanish and technology.
