This presentation articulates how the IB Middle Years Programme framework can serve to reach poor children of color. This presentation highlights practical narratives of culturally relevant practice using the MYP's framework. Highlighting narratives of culturally relevant practice from language arts, social studies, science, and art this presentation articulates how the MYP, through local practitioner adaptation, can serve as framework of wise practices for poor children of color.

Receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, Dr James C. Jupp is a practitioner-scholar with a sixteen-year track record of teaching and working with poor and minority students. Most recently, Dr Jupp led Martin Middle School through their authorization visit. Dr Jupp strongly believes in developing inclusive advanced academics programs that allow children to engage in learning and "find their bliss" while achieving above state requirements, and he combines this belief with both scholarly and practical knowledge of how to reach poor and minority students.
Cristina Davis, Teacher, Martin Middle School
Cristina Davis, a teacher at Martin Middle School in Austin, Texas, graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in Engineering before becoming a teacher of inner-city Latino kids. Ms Davis, as community and service area of interaction leader at Martin, works to connect science learning to community events such as health fair and clean up projects.
Kevin Owens, Social Studies Teacher, Martin Middle School
Mr Kevin Owens has been teaching social studies in the Austin Independent School District for seven years. He received his B.A. in History from Fordham University in 1995. Moving to Austin soon thereafter he received his teaching certification from the University of Texas. Martin Middle School has become home for him, teaching world cultures to sixth graders for the past four years. Incorporating visual art, music, reading and pop culture makes the curriculum more interesting. The MYP's conceptual framework dovetails with both the curriculum and these varieties of learning styles.

Christina Sloan, a teacher of poor and minority students at Martin Middle School, implements MYP delivery strategies to engage her students.
