Will to Implement: Realizing the IB District-Wide for All Students
Audience: Primary Years Programme Summit School District is in the process of implementing IB programmes for all students at the pre-K through 12th grade levels. The high school and middle school are currently authorized to offer the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme and all six elementary schools are in the process of becoming authorized Primary Years Programme schools. A district-wide initiative is not without controversy; it takes the power to think and the will to act on the part of all. Panelists will share their vision and implementation strategies and engage participants in a discussion of the benefits to be gained through full-district implementation as well as the challenges to overcome. Lou Marchesano, Director of Instruction, Summit School DistrictLou Marchesano is currently the Director of Instruction for Summit School District in Colorado. He has been a Diploma Programme and Middle Years Programme Coordinator, English A1 teacher, and has coordinated all three programmes for Poudre School District. Mr Marchesano was principal of Lincoln Junior High School, which instituted a whole-school MYP serving a diverse student population. He has led authorization and evaluation teams for both the Diploma Programme and MYP. He is a workshop leader, served as the chair of the IB North America Regional Heads Representative Committee, and as a board member from 2003-2007. He is currently serving as an Access Coach for IB North America. Organization website: http://www.summit.k12.co.us Millie Hamner, Superintendent of Schools, Summit School DistrictDr Millie Hamner is the superintendent of schools for the Summit School District. She earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Denver in 1996 is now an adjunct faculty member for cohort groups engaged in doctoral studies in education. Dr Hamner has dedicated her career to the belief that it is through a strong public education system that all children can be successful and contribute to the global community. Her interests include singing with her husband and friends and exploring the seasons of beauty and adventure found in Colorado's mountains. Organization website: http://www.summit.k12.co.us Gayle Jones-Westerberg, Principal, Dillon Valley Dual Language Elementary School, Summit School DistrictGayle Westerberg has taught all levels of education from pre-school through college level. She currently serves as an elementary Principal for Dillon Valley Bi-Lingual Elementary School, a newly authorized IB World School offering the Primary Years Programme, in Summit School District, Colorado. In 1998, Gayle was selected to represent Colorado as Principal of the Year for the National Association of Elementary Principals. In 2002, she served as President of the Colorado Association of School Executives. Organization website: http://www.summit.k12.co.us Christine Scanlon, President of Summit School District Board of Education, Summit School DistrictChristine Scanlan was appointed in 2007 as Colorado's State Representative for the 56th House District and is a member of the House Education Committee. Representative Scanlan joined The Keystone Center in 1994 and is responsible for directing fundraising for the Keystone Annual Leadership Awards Dinner, developing new funding for curriculum and teacher professional development, securing foundation contributions for the KSS capital effort, and assisting the President with the annual fund campaign. She is also President of the Summit School District's Board of Education, President of the Mountain Board of Cooperative Educational Services, and a Member of the Colorado Tourism Board. |
