This session will examine how IB programmes are implemented in Australia and New Zealand compared to North America. Representatives from Australian Education International and New Zealand's Ministry of Education will give an overview of their respective countries' education systems and how the IB works in practice at primary, middle and diploma years. A representative from AustraLearn will present on university recognition policies in both countries. The session will cover topics including common issues and challenges, opportunities for growth, recognition of the IB Diploma at Australian and New Zealand universities, and global student mobility.

John Hayton was appointed Counselor (Education, Science and Training) at the Australian Embassy in Washington, District of Columbia, in February 2007. Prior to John's appointment he was a Director of the Americas, Europe, Multilateral and VET Sector Policy Section, International Co-operation Branch within DEST since January 2004. John's career has spanned 18 years with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, including postings in Bangkok and New York and three years leading and implementing an information technology industry development program in Tasmania (2001-03). Until recently John was Presiding Member of the Board of The Friends’ School – an IB World School in Hobart, Tasmania.

Mike Woods, Education Counselor, New Zealand Ministry of Education
Mike Woods is the Ministry of Education's North America Education Counselor based at the New Zealand Embassy in Washington, District of Columbia. Mike's experience includes seven years as a secondary teacher, two years as an administrator, and 15 years as a policy advisor. Mike taught at Auckland secondary schools for seven years before moving to Wellington to work on a Computers in Education Programme for the then Department of Education. He became a foundation staff member at the New Zealand Qualifications Authority in 1989. Mike has a degree in Computer Science from the University of Auckland, a master of public policy from Victoria University and a diploma of Teaching.

Amy Deppe, Senior Coordinator, Full Degree, AustraLearn
Amy Deppe heads up full degree enrollment and admissions at AustraLearn. AustraLearn has assisted more than 13,000 students traveling to Australia and New Zealand during the past 16 years on a variety of programs. As the local contact for 30 universities, AustraLearn assists degree seeking students and their advisors by identifying universities, supplying all application materials and admissions advice, US Financial aid and other aspects of the pre-departure processes.
