The Design Cycle: Learning How to Learn

The MYP Technology design cycle is a powerful teaching tool for all disciplines. This session reviews how the design cycle encourages student centered learning and organization while facilitating self-assessment and individual growth. Though the design cycle is a major part of the MYP technology curriculum, it is not only a tool for teaching technology; it is a tool for understanding the process of research. This session emphasizes how the design cycle is used in the MYP personal project and the Diploma Programme extended essay, and most importantly, how it can be used as a tool to give students an opportunity to learn how to learn.

Rena Berlin is a retired Fairfax County, Virginia Humanities teacher and MYP Coordinator. Mrs Berlin has written curriculum for Fairfax County and Steven Spielberg's Shoa Foundation. Mrs Berlin is the recipient of the Martin Luther King Outstanding Educator Award in 2004 and an Intel Teacher Award in 2003. She is currently an IB Regional Field Representative, School Consultant, and workshop leader. Mrs Berlin resides in Richmond, Virginia, with her husband and her dog Flo.
