Assessment OF and FOR Learning: Informing the Learning and the Teaching for Student Success

The mission of schools has changed. No longer is it enough to provide the opportunity to learn, we must also assure the learning of increasingly rigorous academic standards. Only assessing to find out how much a student has learned at a particular point in time (Assessment OF Learning) is not enough to assure the learning. We must also assess to promote learning (Assessment FOR Learning). We need a balance of both Assessment OF and FOR Learning. By using balanced assessment practices in a school and its classrooms we serve the informational needs of both the students, who are in charge of the learning; and the adults, who are in charge of the conditions for learning. We need balanced, quality assessment practices that will support the learning of all students so that all can succeed.

More and more, IB programmes are being used as agents of whole school reform. This is particularly true in the PYP, which is whole school by design, and the MYP, which is often whole school and almost always serves a robust cadre of students. Building on its breakthrough work in high school reform, the National Association of Secondary School Principals has published Breaking Ranks in the Middle: Strategies for leading Middle Level Reform (2006). The book brings together the key concepts in middle grades reform into one clear and easy-to-use document, which is already being used to transform middle schools across the United States and Canada.

Designed for school officials and leaders who are investigating the feasibility of bringing the IB to their schools. This session is also appropriate for schools or districts with existing IB programmes that would like to add additional programmes. The objectives of this session are to familiarize participants with: the philosophy, structure and purposes of the IB programmes; the financial obligations of IB authorization; the educational advantages of IB programmes; the IBO application and authorization processes; the service to be expected from IBO and IBNA and; the processes employed in working with IBO and IBNA.
