The IB Diploma Programme provides two years of rigorous, continuously assessed coursework in the traditional academic disciplines. Students completing this programme are prepared to succeed in the post-secondary setting, bringing with them: 1) a thorough knowledge in the traditional subject areas; 2) the cognitive knowledge and habits of mind necessary to support the demand for extensive critical thinking, critical writing and problem solving skills; and 3) the maturity needed to work independently in a rational and well organized manner. This session will discuss ways to promote the IB Diploma to universities, and will also provide updates on recognition at various universities in the region.

The International Baccalaureate provides a compelling structure for developing and implementing an inquiry based, formative pedagogical model. It is my belief that given the almost universal demand for "academic diversity", we are called to offer academic programs which lead to an appreciation for cultural diversity and which simultaneously provides a rigorous framework for genuinely free intellectual discourse across borders and disciplines.
Room: Michigan A and B
presented by Paul Fairbrother, Head of Online Learning, International Baccalaureate
The creation of an online version of the Diploma Programme has been identified as a means of increasing subject choice for students in IB World Schools and also reaching out to students unable to attend an IB World School. Online learning offers the possibility for students to develop 21st century skills that will equip them for life after school, whether at university or in the work place. Additionally, online learning can help students to develop the attributes described in the IB learner profile. This session will explore the potential of online learning and the implications for teachers, schools and the IB.

A commitment to action is currently being modeled in Sri Lanka following the tsunami of 2004 by teachers and teacher trainers. After an initial response to train national level teacher trainers in how to care for the traumatized population in preschools, the IB was asked to provide more training opportunities. Involved since its inception, PYP workshop leader, Anne Evans shares the personal story of a project now reaching 200 village preschools and presents the opportunities that exist today for schools to adopt preschools within the project and for teachers and trainers to participate.

I will describe what happened over a seven-year period when an inner city secondary school on the Southwest side of Chicago introduced the IB Diploma Programme as one of its pillars for school improvement. This material is research based-- both quantitative and qualitative. It demonstrates that, given proper support, IB students from the inner city can succeed in this kind of program even if they habitually score in the 60th percentile on standardized tests. Internationalism is an important theme in an inner city portal zone.
