The purpose of this session is to demonstrate how and why the study of the Holocaust and genocide are used as a vehicle for discussion and debate and action from ethical, political, scientific, religious, sociological and artistic points of view throughout the IB Diploma Programme. Objectives of the session are to: present best practice ideas, present and discuss varied methodology used in schools worldwide and demonstrate how aspects of the IB Diploma Programme can and do interrelate to enhance students' "international-mindness."

Kim Oliver, 2006 United States National Teacher of the Year, will pick up where her general session left off, facilitating a dialogue about her core belief that every child in every school can learn. With so many elementray schools adopting the whole school model of the IB Primary Years Programme, we need to constantly search for effective strategies to reach all students. In this session, we will explore our underlying assumptions about what works and the prcatical solutions that inspire our students and their families.

Learn how one school created a format to develop an interdisciplinary approach to teaching through a focus on Space Exploration. Students created a "Digital Space Exploration Textbook" under the guiding question "In what ways does space exploration benefit the future of mankind? As part of this project, students examine the past, present, and future aspects of space exploration through the IB Middle Years Programme Areas of Interaction and the IB learner profile, using technology as a way to connect science, humanities, literacy and the arts. Participants will learn how to apply this concept to other topics for interdisciplinary planning.

This session will offer participants the opportunity to hear directly from local IB students who will share their CAS experiences and learn how CAS impacts our students' growth. Both the workshop leader and the student panelists will present a variety of CAS projects. This will be an interactive session so that participants will be able to engage in a question and answer session as well as participate in hands-on activities. Hear directly from the students how CAS has made a difference in their lives.

This session will address a full range of issues relating to language study in all IB programmes. It will include an update of the deliberations of the IB's Second Language Working Party. Dual language programmes, content-based language instruction and other aspects of language education will be addressed. There will be an introduction to the Global Language Convention being hosted by CASIE in conjunction with the IB in Atlanta, April 2008.

Can you imagine doing a CAS trip to Guatemala? What effects would that have on the people that went, and on the community? How would you even begin to measure such effects? How could you apply what you learned to building future CAS Projects, and improving current projects? In this session, we will discuss how to employ Action Research methodologies by sharing the results of our own study on one of our own ongoing CAS Projects, Proyecto Quetzal. Proyecto Quetzal involves, among other things, an intensive service-learning trip to Guatemala. Come see what it's all about!

The success of the IB in North America and the Caribbean has fueled growth and notoriety. In order to maintain a high level of service and meet the growing data needs of schools and districts as well as local and national governments, IB is developing new data collection methods and tools. The school districts project will allow IB to better address schools’ needs, plan for the future and provide current detailed reports of IB students and schools in North America and the Caribbean. This session is designed to offer heads of schools, coordinators and any other individual interested in IB data an introduction to the new data collection tools to be introduced at the beginning of 2008. The session will also discuss the uses of this data and provide a forum for discussion on all topics related to IB data.
