IB Orientation Seminar

This session is designed for school officials and leaders who are investigating the feasibility of bringing the IB to their schools. This session is also appropriate for schools or districts with existing IB programmes that would like to add additional programmes. The objectives of this session are to familiarize participants with: the philosophy, structure and purposes of the IB programmes; the financial obligations of IB authorization; the educational advantages of IB programmes; the application and authorization processes; the service to be expected from the IB; and the processes employed in working with the IB.

Reaching All Learners: Making Differentiation Work, Grades K-8

Bertie Kingore explores the need for differentiated instruction in the classroom when we face the reality that students represent different levels of readiness. In this practical session of research-based strategies, teachers engage in learning experiences and support systems that vary lessons for students with fewer skills, vary lessons to increase challenge, and more efficiently provide product options to reach diverse learners. Dr Kingore models successful guidelines to effectively manage the learning environment and a teaching palette of multiple strategies and activities for differentiating instruction.

Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction, Grades K-12

Lynn Erickson expands our understanding of the conceptual level of knowledge, thinking, and understanding. In this highly interactive session, Dr Erickson will challenge participants’ minds as she contrasts a three-dimensional IB concept-based curriculum and instruction model with the worn out two-dimensional coverage model. Participants will: watch a DVD clip of a three-dimensional, concept-based teacher instructing students; learn specific instructional strategies that engage the hearts and minds of students; learn how to increase conceptual depth and understanding; discuss the importance of a conceptual lens, and learn how to identify important related concepts; practice writing clear and powerful central Ideas, and use the related concepts to add “supporting ideas”; and, learn how to write three different kinds of questions to guide the unit inquiry. Participants will realize the power of the IB as an “idea-centered” curricula.

Building Capacity for Access and Equity

This session will provide participants with strategies and a discussion forum to expand access and equity in the MYP and Diploma Programme through a presentation highlighting a three-year project, funded by the U.S. Department of education, in order to develop resources for schools to prepare a greater number of MYP students for success in the Diploma Program. Participants will have the opportunity learn how the partnership between the IB and three IB pilot schools developed their capacity to increase access to IB through strategic planning, professional learning groups, and engaging guidance counselors. Interactive experiences will help participants who wish to expand the IB philosophy and enhance access for all students to apply the findings from the pilot project to their own school communities.

Recognition of the IB Diploma

An update on current university and government recognition for the IB programmes. The session will include recommendations and advice for gaining recognition with both legislators and universities and will detail the support that the IB can provide to such initiatives. Examples of good policy and successful strategies will be shared and discussed. This session is primarily designed for diploma programme coordinators and administrators. Some of the government discussion will be appropriate for MYP and PYP coordinators, heads of schools, active members of associations of IB World Schools, legislators, university personnel, and parents.
