The Role of Additional Language Teachers in the Primary Years Programme

Teaching an additional language starting at age seven is one of the requirements of the Primary Years Programme, but how do schools go about doing this? This presentation will discuss the role of additional language teachers within a PYP school. It will also outline some measures administrators and teachers alike could take to implement an effective additional language program within their setting according to their physical, financial, and personnel means.


Christelle Thompson, PYP Coordinator; Instructor of French Language, University Laboratory School - Louisiana State University

Christelle Thompson was born, raised, and educated in Belgium where she received a license in Germanic Philology and Literature and an agrégation to teach English and German at the high school level and above from the Universite Catholique de Louvain. After college, she moved to the US where she's been teaching French as a second language, from kindergarten through high school. She currently is the PYP Coordinator at the University Laboratory School on the Louisiana State University campus and has conducted numerous PYP trainings in the IB North America region.
