The Journey of Three Dual Language Schools as They Become IB Primary Years Programme Schools

In this session you will hear from principals, PYP Consultants and Coordinators, Dual Language/GT Specialists, and the Grant Manager as they explain ESTUDIOS (Enabling Students to Understand and Demonstrate the Importance of Outstanding Scholarship) a J.K. Javits grant project designed to merge the IB Primary Years Programme with existing dual language programs in three Texas schools. With the aid of the PYP consultants and extensive training opportunities, ESTUDIOS Schools have made rapid progress in their efforts to better serve their students, especially those traditionally under-represented in gifted programs. Early data gathered will be shared. During the last 15 minutes the presenters will be joined by a Texas Education Agency Representative and select teachers from the school on a panel to answer questions.

Ann Wink, Programme Specialist, International Baccalaureate
Ann Wink is currently Programme Specialist for IB North America, working in the division of Outreach and Volunteer Services. She is also the primary contact with schools receiving Javits grants from the US Department of Education. She holds a bachelor of science degree and a Texas teaching certificate for grades K-8 from Angelo State University, in Angelo, Texas. She also earned a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an endorsement in Gifted Child Education and Supervision certification from Texas A&M University. During her 29-year career in public education, she served as a teacher and a coordinator of gifted education programmes for kindergarten through 12th grade.

Brian Doyle, Principal, Northline Elementary School
Brian Scott Doyle has been the Principal at Northline Elementary School in Houston, Texas, since 2001; before taking this role, he was Assistant Principal at the school for nine years. His career with the Houston Independent School District began in 1979 at Stevenson Elementary School, where he received the Stevenson Teacher of the Year & Jaycees Outstanding Young Educator in 1986-1987. He received his M.Ed., Administration and Supervision at University of Houston, Central Campus, and is currently working to complete the Public School Administration doctoral program at Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas.

Patricia Rendon, GT Specialist, Region 1 Education Service Center
Patricia Rendon is a Gifted and Talented Coordinator at the Region One Education Service Center in Edinburg, Texas, where she works with Gifted and Talented program coordinators in the 37 school districts of the Region One area. Rendon earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Bilingual/Bicultural education from the University of Texas-Brownsville and a master’s degree in Gifted and Talented education from the University of Texas Pan American. She taught at the elementary and middle school levels before working at the central office in the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District. Her experience in working with diverse students comes from her work during the Jacob K. Javits Bilingual/Gifted Education Grant. Patricia also serves as an Executive Board member for the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented and is a contributing editor for the Roeper Review.

Peggy Bumanis, PYP Coordinator, Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School STS
Peggy Bumanis has over 25 years of teaching experience. For the last five years she has been the PYP Coordinator at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School, a co-ed independent school located outside of Calgary, Alberta. This year she will be leaving the school to pursue other interests in the educational field. Ms Bumanis is also IB workshop leader, site visitor and consultant.
