Developing the IB Learner Profile in Diploma Programme Schools

Room: Superior A

presented by Tristian Stobie, Head of Diploma Programme development, International Baccalaureate

The learner profile is the embodiment of the IB mission statement in ten attributes. It provides for the first time a clear, unambiguous statement of the values that have always underpinned the structure and content of each of the programmes. This session explores how schools can develop the profile, with the focus on the Diploma Programme age range, although the presentation is also relevant for the other programmes.

Literature, die Literatur, la Literatura, la Litterature: Using Literature to Share the World and the Future

Room: Colorado

presented by Marian C. Hulsey, IB English A1 HL Teacher, Classen School of Advanced Studies
Nancy Boudreau, IB Language B German Teacher, Classen School of Advanced Studies
Jennifer Robinson, IB Language B French Teacher, Classen School of Advanced Studies
Sue Waters, IB Language B Spanish Teacher, Classen School of Advanced Studies

Classen School of Advanced Studies is a public and specialty college preparatory school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. To expand students' knowledge of the world in which they will take their places as informed and involved citizens, English A1 and Group 2 Language B teachers collaborated to create units that were "more than just literature". We will show some of the videotaped presentations of student work, and a PowerPoint demonstration of how teachers can adapt these ideas to their current world literature and language B classes. Also, using song and fable, we will demonstrate how languages sound more alike than different as they provide ways to share the world and the future by conveying the human experience.

The IB Diploma Programme Online: Opportunities and Challenges

Room: Michigan A and B

presented by Paul Fairbrother, Head of Online Learning, International Baccalaureate

The creation of an online version of the Diploma Programme has been identified as a means of increasing subject choice for students in IB World Schools and also reaching out to students unable to attend an IB World School. Online learning offers the possibility for students to develop 21st century skills that will equip them for life after school, whether at university or in the work place. Additionally, online learning can help students to develop the attributes described in the IB learner profile. This session will explore the potential of online learning and the implications for teachers, schools and the IB.

International Baccalaureate: An Urban Large Inner City Public Secondary School

Room: Huron

presented by Raymond Buniak, Diploma Programme Coordinator, Thomas Kelly High School

I will describe what happened over a seven-year period when an inner city secondary school on the Southwest side of Chicago introduced the IB Diploma Programme as one of its pillars for school improvement. This material is research based-- both quantitative and qualitative. It demonstrates that, given proper support, IB students from the inner city can succeed in this kind of program even if they habitually score in the 60th percentile on standardized tests. Internationalism is an important theme in an inner city portal zone.

Albertson College of Idaho and the IB Diploma Programme

Room: Arkansas

presented by Brian A. Bava, Associate Director of Admissions/Director of International Student Recruitment, Albertson College of Idaho

This will be a discussion of how Albertson College of Idaho has embraced the International Baccalaureate Programme and the advantages we are currently providing International Baccalaureate participants. It will also touch on the foundational similarities between the International Baccalaureate curriculum and a liberal arts core curriculum in a small college setting, highlighting our missions and the curricula, while highlighting the collaborative efforts of RiverStone International School (Boise, Idaho) and Albertson College of Idaho to develop a "lab school" learning community. The hope is to demonstrate how small liberal arts colleges, such as Albertson College, are especially well-prepared to understand and serve IB diploma holders.

What Research Says About the IB Programme Standards and Practices

Room: Ontario

presented by David Ogden, IB Consultant,

What connections do the IB's programme standards have to school improvement research? Learn how the standards and practices align with research-proven practices. Participants will review selected research studies to see the overlap between research-based practices and IB's recommended practices for PYP, MYP and Diploma Programme schools. Schools can see how they follow the research when they implement the IB's standards and practices.

Development and Expansion of International Baccalaureate Programmes through Grant Funding

Room: Superior B

presented by Michelle Moody, Project Manager, MSAP Grant/IB Citywide Administrator, Chicago Public Schools
Tracey Stelly, IB Administrator, The Chicago Public Schools

The Chicago Public Schools has developed an extensive network of International Baccalaureate schools throughout the city. In addition to financial support from the district, grant opportunities were explored to expand the International Baccalaureate programmes. The Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant allowed for the introduction of the IB Primary Years Programme as a magnet option and provided for the development of several whole school IB programmes. This session will discuss how MSAP and other grant funding provide for development and expansion of IB programmes and other innovative themes.
